About Winchester

Winchester, now a quiet Cathedral City and country town, is steeped in history beginning in 450 BC and since that time great Kings and Bishops have left lasting reminders of their presence. During Saxon times Winchester was the capital of England and the city remained a Royal playground for centuries afterwards. This brief historical outline gives an insight into the City's fascinating past and in every street are buildings which bear witness to it's intrinsic history and great beauty. Today its amenities include a host of interesting shops and markets, museums, galleries and treasures, theatre, cinema and its many public houses, cafes and bistros and varied restaurants.

Brymer House is only a 12 minute walk to the City centre, either beside the River through Winchester College grounds or the Close of our mighty Cathedral, you will find considerable interest - packed with historic buildings, monuments and museums. The centre is compact with it’s shops, many restaurants, cosy cafes, theatre, cinema and old pubs all within a short walk. There is a colourful weekly market and the largest Christmas Market in the country.

The magnificent Winchester Cathedral has the longest Medieval Nave in Europe and burial place of Jane Austen. There is also the Great Hall, home to the legendry Round Table, the Bishop’s Palaces and you may tour Winchester College and visit Winchester’s Military Museums.

Brymer House is a minutes walk to the verdant water meadows of the River Itchen and the Hospital of St. Cross with it's Medieval Almshouse, Brethren’s Hall, Lodgings and beautiful walled gardens. Continue through the meadows with grazing cattle up St. Catherine’s Hill for the finest view over the whole City.

Nearby are some of Hampshire's charming small towns and villages - Alresford with it’s steam railway, Stockbridge on the famous River Test, Chawton with Jane Austen’s house, Marwell Zoo, Mottisfont and Romsey Abbeys and Whitchurch Silk Mill. Within a short drive, too, is Southampton and then Portsmouth, both with crossings to the Isle of Wight.

With so much to do and see in Winchester, many of our guests have found their stay with us all too short!
